What is a Dementor?

A Dementor is a Dark creature, which means that it is a creature often affiliated with the Dark side or the side of evil.  It is also affiliated with the Dark Arts. The Dementor resembles a black hooded creature that floats above the ground. Looking from afar, it can resemble a human that is wearing a black cloak over its head except for the fact that it glides and it doesn’t have feet. It is taller than most humans, being over 10 feet or approximately 3 meters tall. When its cloak is removed, it can be compared to a decaying body because it is very thin and grey. It has no face, but has a kind of large gaping hole on the place where its mouth should have been.

Several signs could be observed to determine if a Dementor is near vicinity. The first and most obvious sign is the temperature. When a Dementor is near a place, the temperature drops, making it very cold in the place where the Dementor is. This causes effects such as water being frozen. People around Dementors also tend to get depressed and if exposed to these creatures for a long time, they can get driven into insanity.

Dementor’s Kiss

In order to survive, Dementors feed on the happiness and cheer of the human beings around them. Sometimes, there are times in which the Dementor will find a prey that is unable to fight it off. It will then proceed to do the Dementor’s Kiss, a horrible ability of the Dementor which allows it to suck or consume the soul of a human being. This is done by Dementor using its large “mouth”. It will place its “mouth” on the mouth of its victim, slowly sucking out its soul until only the body of the victim will remain. The Dementor’s Kiss is sometimes used a punishment by the old Ministry of Magic to the convicts which escaped Azkaban in the past.

Protection

The most common way to protect against Dementors is the by the usage of the Patronus Charm. By casting the Patronus charm, casters will be able to either keep the Dementors at a safe distance and slow it down through the use of the Patronus as a shield-like substance or drive it away by the use of a Corporeal Patronus or a Patronus that takes the shape of an animal.

An uncommon form of protection against the creatures would be by the transformation of a person to his or her Animagus form. Dementors cannot sense the feelings and emotions of lower life forms such as animals so in an Animagus form, the person can temporarily escape the effects of the Dementors he or she would otherwise feel while in human form.

Allegiance and Affiliations

Before the return of Lord Voldemort, the Dementors were serving under the Ministry of Magic as the guards of the Wizarding Prison Azkaban. However, after the return of Voldemort, the Dementors protested against the Ministry and joined him after the promise of more victims for them to feed on. It turns out that Dementors hold no true loyalty for a certain individual or group. They only go with those who can promise them the most food.
