Tales of Beedle the Bard, The:
This is a story book for witches' and wizards' children, that was released in the fifteenth century. It is given to Hermione Granger when she is informed that it is her's to keep, through the reading of Albus Dumbledore's will in the Deathly Hallows book. Ron Weasley already knew about the tales because the Weasley family owned the book and it appears that it is quite common for witches and wizards to own it. Of course, Harry and Hermione had never heard of it because they grew up with Muggles and read Muggle fairy tale stories instead.
It is originally written in Ancient Runes but because Hermione has studied this subject she can translate it into English and fully comprehend it.
This is a very useful tool in the quest to find Voldemort's Horcruxes and to defeat him because it includes, The Tale of the Three Brothers. This story is what makes the trio, ( Harry, Ron and Hermione ) learn about what the Deathly Hallows are. They are then in possession of the knowledge of how to become the Master of Death.
There is a real difference between Muggle and Witches and Wizards fairy tale stories. In Muggle fairy tales, magic is usually at the root of the hero or heroine's problems but in The Tales of Beedle the Bard instead, the hero or heroine's dilemmas are solved by them being able to perform magic themselves but the problems are usually still very difficult for them to resolve, just like in the Muggle fairy tales. The morals that are taught however, remain the same as in Muggle fairy tales, for example: that good, which is rewarded, usually triumphs over evil, that is punished.
By reading these stories, the children with magical abilities realize that magic is not the only factor required in solving their problems and that other things such as, friendship, bravery and intelligence also come into play. This book informs them that magic can cause as many problems as it can resolve them and for them to be careful with their magical gifts. In the end, it appears that these are quite cautionary tales.
The tales included in the Tales of Beedle the Bard are: The Wizard and the Hopping Pot, The Warlock's Hairy Heart, The Tale of the Three Brothers, Babbitty Rabbitty and her Cackling Stump, The Fountain of Fair Fortune and Grumble the Grubby Goat.
In the version released solely for Muggles, it is meant to be exactly like the storybook used in the Harry Potter series, the following tales are included: The Wizard and the Hopping Pot, The Fountain of Fair Fortune, The Warlock's Hairy Heart, Babbitty Rabbitty and her Cackling Stump, The Tale of the Three Brothers and it also includes commentary written by Albus Dumbledore.
