Expecto Patronum Charm:
The Expecto Patronum Charm is used to defeat dark creatures, such as Dementors and Lethifolds. It is the only known charm to defeat these two dark creatures.
To perform this charm successfully you point your wand at the dark creature that you are trying to defend yourself against and say the following incantation: Expecto Patronum (ecks-PEK-toh pah-TRO-num). The most important thing to do, to be able to cast this charm, is to think and concentrate very hard on the most happy thought that you can procure in your mind. It will act as a shield against the Dementors, who are trying to suck out your soul and all of your happy memories.
This makes silver wisps of vapor come out from your wand and can cause a corporeal or incorporeal Patronus to occur.
Albus Dumbledore devised another use for this charm, that is only used by members of the Order of the Phoenix. Its use is to send messages to another person using a corporeal or non-corporeal Patronus. This message will speak with the voice of the caster and could even have slight images and sounds for the recipient.
This charm is considered advanced magic and is not even taught in Charms Class at Hogwarts. Harry Potter is one of the youngest known wizards to ever cast one.
A Patronus means a protector or guardian, which is its exact purpose. The Expecto Patronum incantation translates to: "I await a protector" which is an apt way of describing it.
In unusual and rare circumstances, the Incorporeal Patronus and the Corporeal Patronus may be united to create a third unique type of Patronus. This third Patronus, is a combination of the qualities and features of an Incorporeal Patronus and a Corporeal Patronus.
A direct quote from, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban film, explains this charm rather well: "A Patronus is a kind of positive force, and for the wizard who can conjure one, it works something like a shield, with the Dementor feeding on it, rather than him. In order for it to work, you need to think of a memory. Not just any memory, a very happy memory, a very powerful memory… Allow it to fill you up... lose yourself in it... then speak the incantation "Expecto Patronum"."
—Remus Lupin teaching Harry Potter the Patronus Charm.
Patronuses can be Incorporeal or Corporeal in nature.
An Incorporeal Patronus is when your Patronus does not resemble any creature and does not have any specific features. They are usually wisps of silvery mist or a type of white shield, that comes from the witch or wizard's wand.
A Corporeal Patronus is only able to be conjured by more experienced and powerful witches and wizards. The spell will then take the form of your own special animal, in a translucent and bright white form, to defend and drive away many Dementors at once.
The animal that the Patronus will be is usually a depiction of the witch or wizards personality but they can change from traumatic and emotional experiences.
